EXCERPT ONE

The Barn at Four in the Morning

The mare was thinking about pain in a way that had no words, only weather a low grey pressure behind her ribs. MIRO stood in the doorway with her hands loose at her sides and let it arrive.

"You're not supposed to be out here alone," Mike said behind her, already rolling his sleeves.

"She called me," MIRO said. It was not quite true and not quite a lie; the mare had called everything that could hear, and MIRO was simply the only one in the valley who could.

He didn't argue. That was the thing about Mike he had stopped arguing with the impossible somewhere around the second year, and had settled instead into a careful, practical faith that whatever MIRO said about an animal was probably load-bearing.
